The goal with Resolution No. 1 was to create something that reflected brooding mood and intensity, solitude and anonymity. I wanted to shoot and edit something with live people and animals and nature and throw in hints of Salvador Dali, Man Ray, Edward Hopper, some MC Escher and others….

Listen closely to the soundscape….All the water, wind & bird sounds are signals from shortwave and pirate radio stations, many of which go back decades. Some are examples of what’re know as Shortwave Numbers Stations, used by intelligence agencies to transmit secret messages.

This particular event featured participants both pro- and anti-war, much bitterness emerged quickly on all fronts….

I just tried to reproduce the moment, capture the vibe interestingly…

This is a “making of” – type video of a decoupage piece in my studio….

Overall? The idea here was to create something temporal that reflected the themes going on in the decoupage/sculpture thing I was working on at the time: plague; extinction; destruction; traitorous behavior; insects; insecurity; dinosaurs – and of course the devil.

The audio in “her inner self (revealed)” comes from many sources – some found; some historic; some created by me. Overall, the sound bed is supposed to connotate bleak destruction and monstrous gloom.

This is a complaint about how modern popular culture is garbage, and what was, was better.

The Collyer brothers, Homer and Langley, were brothers who became famous because of their snobbish nature, garbage in their home, and compulsive hoarding

Utterly unPlanned, this started with a house chore. It took 8 takes and false starts to get started, which you only see at the end.

I composed the audio sound-bed (“Potluck Dinner”) in 1996. Using several dozen clips lifted from ancient 78rpm records, old-time radio shows, contemporary news broadcasts and other period music. It was designed as an audio metaphor representing the changes in the United States in late 1939, just after World War II had begun.

This was in the first couple hours of the storm, we knew it would be big, did not know another storm was right behind it….

Time lapse’d from several locations, it was almost impossible to walk with the wind and sleet and snow…..

…luckily I was fortified with the bare essentials one needs when thwarting and exploiting storms….

I was at DC Art-O-Matic and saw a whole lot of good and bad work, but a flag off to the side and outside caught my attention.

So much of the USA is going down the drain – people get crasser, stupider and more foolish and continue chipping away at national and individual dignity….

…listen to the words of the speakers, be mesmerized by more than the flag’s waves….these are good words on the state of the union…

Ever since, my list of Things To Avoid At All Costs has grown considerably.

The video & dialogue combines physics, dissatisfaction and insanity to represent how those who’ve not yet pulled the plug are utterly wasting their lives.

I shot the video, wrote the words and music, arranged the string quartet and played all the music, except for the drums and cello.

This was an introduction to a lecture for an art history course I taught at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, called Digital Media Culture.

The idea was to get the students focused on communication trends, origins, declines, significance and more, using obsolete media compressed into modern media.

Using (mostly) public domain imagery, audio and video this was to get the students thinking about the definition of "media", as well as the meaning of Marshall McLuhan’s famous phrase, "the medium is the message".

This 1-minute piece is an abstract, an expressionist temporal and audio photograph of a series of rising emotions, influenced loosely by “Medea”, written by Euripedes in 431 BC.

A major storm blows in, with ideas of its own, on sudden death, loss of power and the state of nature….

Power is out for nearly everyone for days, and i go exploring at night with a camera. It’s interesting as to what you can see in near total darkness that you cannot otherwise.

The footage is live and raw, with some desaturation, inversion and time lapse, no special effects. It was all shot during and in the immediate aftermath of the storm, everything was found serendipity, even the cheerleader….

I generally eschew special effects like you see in “Sugar Dance”, but it looked so sweet, I had to curb my impulse……
